Deer Run 5K - Falling into 3rd Place

"The power inside of you is far great than any problem outside of you." - Dr. Ben Lerner

I did the Deer Run 5K in Brown Deer, this last Saturday. It is part of a championship series for the Badgerland Strider's, the local running club.

This race is special to me because it is the race where Team CMT had it's first race 6 years ago. We started with just three of us and we have now grown to more than 200 members in 39 states.

There were two distances contested, the 5K and 10K. Right mow I am doing shorter distances until I gear up for the New York marathon in November. Right now I am enjoying the shorter distances as I compete in the shorter club series. Last year I won the club championship for the short distance, this year I am currently in second place.

I get points toward the series depending on how I finish. Last year I finished 4th in my age group and was hoping for the same.

The race start was at 9 am and I was there by 7:30. I have no idea why I get there so early. I always get a good parking spot and time to relax before I do my pre-race warm-ups.

It always seems to be cold the weekend of this race and everything is outside. Since it was only 38 F and windy I waited in my car for the race start until it was time to warm-up.

I do some easy running and dynamic stretches to get ready. It gives me a chance to get the layers right.  I chose to run without a jacket. For once I got the layers right.

My plan was to run easy for just a couple of minutes and then run moderately hard the rest of the race.
It takes the first few minutes to weed through the crowd. Everything was going according to plan. I was pushing the pace, but could still carry on a conversation. I was a runner wearing a NY marathon jacket and asked him about the course.

I saw a women that looked to be in my age group. I passed her, then she caught me. I decided to take off and put her away. As I went over a pot hole in the road, my ankle gave out and I went down.   Because of my CMT, I have very night calves and inflexible ankles. Sometimes the only thing they can do is turn over sideways.  This was the third fall I've had in a month.  The other two falls happened when my foot got caught on a rise in the side walk during a training run. Those were both scary because I violently fell forward. I landed on my palms both times and they are still sore.  I am hoping this is not going to become a pattern. So far I have not been hurt.

It hurt when I hit the ground and several runners around me checked on me.  The runner in my age group caught me, but I was back on my feet pretty quickly and finally put some distance between us. I was careful to be quick through all the water stops.

I was a cold day, but the sun felt warm when the wind was at our backs.  The course was flat and fairly easy. I finished in 31:20, not a great time, but good enough for 3rd in my age group.

I'm fine after the fall and it did not seem to affect my placing. I got lucky this time.  I always promised myself that if I start falling in races I will stop racing. Hopefully this is not a start of a pattern. Time will tell.

Lime Shrimp

1 pound medium raw shrimp
1 tablespoons Ghee
1 teaspoon minced ginger
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 cup celery
1/2 cup dry white wine
1 lime
1/2 cup slivered almonds

Put Ghee into cast iron skillet on medium heat. When the ghee is melted add the ginger and garlic. Stir for a minute.  Add the shrimp and cook for 5 minutes. Add the wine and cook until the liquids cook off. In the mean time, grate the zest from the lime and squeeze the juice into a small bowl.

Add the celery and the lime juice.   Remove from the heat and sprinkle the almonds over the top.

I served with bamboo rice and a cabbage salad.

Italian Beef Soup

Italian Beef Soup

I put this soup together from ingredients I had around the house. I make bone broth often to use as a soup base and freeze the meat that comes off of the bones. So I usually have a good start when I want soup for the week. Feel free to take ingredients out or add what you have around the house. It reminded me of an Italian beef sandwich.

5 cups beef bone broth
2 cups cooked beef
2 stalks celery chopped
2 carrots chopped
1 medium yellow onion
1 cup zucchini milk (zucchini ground with water that I freeze)
1 (15 ounce ) can chopped tomatoes
1 cup french style frozen green beans
1 cup frozen whole kernel corn
1 yellow pepper chopped
1/2 cup dry orzo pasta
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 tablespoon oregano

Put the broth into a large stock pot. Bring to a boil and then turn down to a simmer. Add the beef and onion. Cook for 5 minutes, then add everything else except the pasta. Cook for another 5 minutes. Bring the mixture to a boil and add the orzo pasta. Cook for the time suggested on the package.

Fair Friday DIY Rash Cream

DIY Rash Cream

Another product to help minimize the toxins in my life. I but this one together myself based on what I've learned from making a number of these natural products.  The essential oils in this recipe are all anti-inflammatory.  Give it a try.

2 tablespoons Shea butter
1 tablespoon olive oil steeped in dried calendula
1 tablespoon bees wax pellets
1 tablespoon baking soda
2 tablespoons bentonite clay
1 teaspoon witch hazel
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
10 drops peppermint essential oil
5 drops tea tree essential oil
5  drops chamomile essential oil

Put the Shea butter, olive oil and beeswax into a glass jar. Place in a pan with two inches of water. Bring to a boil to melt the wax. Stir to combine the ingredients.

Remove from the heat and add the baking soda, clay, witch hazel and vinegar.  Add the oils. Put into glass jars.

Th clay and witch hazel are great for drawing out toxins. The vinegar can help sooth inflammation. Tea Tree oil is an anti-fungal and antibacterial to help healing.  The chamomile is also a calming agent for itchy skin.  The peppermint oil provides a cooling sensation to help stop pain and itching.

Fair Friday- Anti Itch Salve

I have been taking small steps over the last two years to live a healthier life. One of those steps is getting rid of toxins.  Take a look at the average label on the beauty products you use. They contain lots of chemicals that have been shown to cause health issues. So I have been moving toward creating my own products from natural ingredients.  This recipe came from the daily news letter of Dr. Axe.
You can sign up for his daily letter at draxe.com
It contains lots of great information on supplements, herbs and healthy recipes.  I tried this one recently. I have very sensitive skin and I find this salve does a good job of calming down the irritation. It is very easy and quick to put together. I get all of the ingredients on Amazon.

1 tablespoon mango butter
1 tablespoon coconut oil
2 tablespoon beeswax
2 tablespoon calendula oil (dried petals soaked in olive oil for 3 weeks)
1 teaspoon aloe vera juice
1 tablespoon witch hazel
1 teaspoon neem oil
10 drops of following essential oils:

  • lemon
  • lavendar
  • tea tree
  • peppermint
  • sandlewood
  • juniper
  • rose geranium
  • eucalyptus
  • murrh
  • rose hip
  • chamomile

Put the mango butter, coconut oil, beeswax and calendula  oil in a small glass jar.  Put the jar into a pan with 2 inches of water. Heat the water just below boiling until the wax is melted. Stir to combine.
Remove from heat and cool slightly.
Add the aloe vera, witch hazel, neem oil and the essential oils. Pour into glass jars.
Store in a cool dark place.

Soup Sunday- Kitchen Sink Chili

Kitchen Sink Chili

I often cook without a recipe and use ingredients I have on hand. That was the case with today's recipe. I took items from the refrigerator, my freezer and pantry.   * The zucchini milk is made by grinding fresh zucchini with water in a blender.  It is an easy way to add some extra vegetables to recipes.

Feel free to always change a recipe to suit your tastes and what you have in the house.

1 lb taco seasoned ground beef
1/2 yellow onion
1 tablespoon olive oil
3 (15 ounce) cans diced tomatoes
1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
2 cups water
1 (7 ounce) can green chilies
1 cup mix of green, red and yellow peppers chopped
1 (15 ounce) can chili beans
1 (15 ounce) can black beans
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 cup zucchini milk*
Sour cream
Grated cheddar cheese

Add the oil to a Dutch oven. Add the onions and cook until they are soft.  Add the rest of the ingredients except for the black and chili beans.  Simmer for 1 1/2 hours. Add the beans and cook for another 30 minutes.

This soup freezes well. I usually freeze half for later.

First Call 5K, Adapt and Overcome

"Improvise, Adapt, Overcome." -Armed Forces Mantra

The weather was not promising when I woke up on March 31st. I had a 5K race scheduled at Sunset Park in Waukesha.  The First Call race was the last one in the Chilly Willy race series.

It was 33 F and pouring rain. I would prefer snow. Snow is fun to run in and does not soak into your clothes.  Just above freezing, windy and rainy is just miserable. Lucky for me I was only signed up for the 5K. There was also a 10K and half marathon as part of the same event.

There were points on the line and the registration was paid for. I did not want to waste the money.  I am counting every penny since I am currently not working.

The park was a 30 minute drive from home. A long time to consider running in the pouring rain.
I got to the race venue early so that I could get a parking spot in the park. I did not want to have to wait for the shuttle in the rain or stand around waiting for the start. There was no shelter at the start.

When I arrived it was still pouring, windy and cold. I got my race number and stayed in my nice warm car.

The rain was still pouring when the half marathon started.  A half hour later it has slowed to a light rain for the start of the 5K/10 K. I would be wearing a rain coat with a hood to keep out the rain.  By the time the race was over the rain had stopped.

My plan for the race was just to run it easy since at that time I had planned to go to the Duathlon National Championship.  It was a flat course and I knew I would do no better than 2nd in my age group. I just wanted the points so that I held my 2nd place spot in the series.

I started out with just an easy job. As the race went on, I did up the pace a bit.  It was cold, wet and not a whole lot of fun. I finished in 32:12. It was good enough for 2nd place in my age group and I finished 2nd in my age group for the series. It certainly was a day to adapt and overcome.

It has been a fun series and kept me working hard over the winter.  Triathlon season will be starting shortly and soon I will be starting training for the NY marathon.  Races in bad weather are not fun, but they are great learning experiences. You never know what kind of conditions will challenge you on race day.  Running in this kind of weather is a great confidence booster. Doing it once means that I can do it whenever needed. I just have to adapt and overcome.
